Definition

What is a sworn translation?

A sworn (or certified) translation is a translation produced by a translator who has taken an oath before a court. It is accompanied by an official statement certifying the accuracy and authenticity of the translation relative to the original document.

The translator affixes their official stamp, handwritten signature, and a unique reference number. This document has legal value recognised by all public and private institutions in Belgium and abroad.

Important: a standard translation cannot replace a sworn translation for official procedures. Institutions systematically refuse non-certified documents.

Authorised by the courts

All our translators have taken an oath before the court and are registered in the official Belgian register of sworn translators and interpreters.

Documents accepted everywhere

Our certified translations are recognised by all Belgian, Luxembourg, and international institutions without exception.

Official stamp & signature

Each translation bears the translator's official stamp, their handwritten signature, and a unique reference number for traceability.

International

Validity abroad

Depending on the destination country, additional steps may be required. We guide you through the process.

Simple legalisation

Belgium · Luxembourg

A sworn translation alone is sufficient for most administrative procedures in Belgium and French-speaking countries. It is directly accepted by institutions without any additional process.

Apostille (Hague Convention)

125 signatory countries

For countries signatory to the Hague Convention (USA, Canada, Australia, Japan…), an apostille must be affixed by the Chamber of Notaries or the Federal Justice Department. Timeframe: 1 to 2 weeks.

Consular legalisation

Non-Hague signatory countries

For certain countries (China, Algeria, Morocco, Vietnam…), consular legalisation is required after the sworn translation. We guide you through this procedure.

Need help? We advise you free of charge on the procedure to follow based on your destination country. Contact us before placing your order if you are unsure of the level of legalisation required.
