The three types of translation: an overview

There is a clear hierarchy between the three types of translation. Each one meets a specific need and is not interchangeable with the others. Understanding these differences will save you from costly administrative rejections in terms of both time and money.

Sworn translation: for official procedures

A sworn translation, also called an official certified translation, is the only type with a legal value recognised by Belgian and foreign authorities. It is performed by a translator who has taken an oath before a Belgian court of appeal. Their signature and official stamp guarantee the accuracy of the translation relative to the original.

It is required for all documents submitted to public authorities, embassies, courts or notaries. In Belgium, the three official languages (French, Dutch, German) and more than 70 foreign languages are covered by sworn certified translators.

A certified translation is produced by a certified translation agency (ISO 17100 standard or equivalent) or by a translator specialised in a specific field. It includes a declaration of conformity signed by the agency, attesting to the quality and accuracy of the translation.

It is suitable for professional uses that do not involve a public authority: international commercial contracts, tenders, technical documentation, multilingual marketing content. It offers quality assurance but does not carry the legal value of a sworn translation.

Standard translation: for personal understanding

Never use a standard translation for an administrative or judicial procedure, even if it seems perfectly accurate. It will be rejected. For important contracts, it may serve as a basis for understanding but does not replace a certified or sworn translation.

Can a certified translation replace a sworn translation?
