A sworn translation has no legal expiry date
Legally, a sworn translation has no intrinsic expiry date. The sworn translator certifies that, on the date of their signature, the translation is faithful to the source document in front of them. That certification does not "lapse" after a set period: the translation itself remains valid indefinitely. No Belgian text sets an automatic period of validity for a sworn translation.
In other words, it is not the translation that expires, but possibly the source document it reproduces, or the recipient's requirement asking for a recent document.

Why the authority often asks for a "recent" document
In practice, many Belgian and foreign authorities require a document less than 3 to 6 monthsold. This requirement does not concern the translation, but the freshness of the original record. This is especially true for civil status records: birth certificate, marriage certificate, certificate of celibacy or of no impediment to marriage. These records can change (marriage, divorce, marginal note), so the recipient wants an up-to-date version.
The logical consequence: if you are asked for a birth certificate less than 3 months old, you must request a new recent copy from the municipality, then have it translated. The cases where the translation remains valid indefinitely
Some documents never change once issued. Their sworn translation therefore remains usable with no time limit:
- Diplomas and transcripts: a diploma you obtained does not change, so its translation stays valid years later.
- Judgments and court decisions: a final judgment is fixed; its translation keeps its value.
- Historical notarial deeds, patents, signed contracts: the content is final as of the date of signature.
For these documents, the authority has in principle no reason to ask for a "fresh" translation. If it does so anyway, it is a formal requirement of the recipient, not a rule of validity.
The recipient sets the rule, not the translator
The key point to remember: the "validity" of a sworn translation almost always depends on the body receiving it. A municipality, a consulate, a university or a court may impose its own acceptance period.
