The interpreter sits directly beside one or two participants and whispers a continuous rendition of the proceedings into their ear, without any equipment. What is chuchotage interpreting?

Chuchotage (from the French word for 'whispering') is a mode of simultaneous interpreting performed without booth, microphone or headset. The interpreter listens to the speaker and simultaneously whispers a continuous rendition in the target language to one or two participants sitting immediately adjacent. The interpreter and the participants remain integrated within the meeting room, invisible as a separate function to the other attendees.

The format is formally recognised under ISO 2603 and ISO 4043 as a legitimate mode of simultaneous interpreting. It requires the same cognitive skill set as booth-based simultaneous interpreting - real-time processing, compression and rendition - but adds the physical constraint of maintaining a very low volume while remaining accurate and complete.

Because sustained whispering is more physically demanding than booth interpreting, chuchotage assignments exceeding 90 minutes are typically covered by two interpreters working in short rotation to maintain quality. For shorter meetings or clearly defined half-day sessions, a single experienced interpreter may cover the assignment without rotation.

When is chuchotage the right format in Belgium?

It scales well to audiences of hundreds and allows multiple language combinations running in parallel.

Chuchotage is ideal when only one or two participants need interpreting, the venue cannot accommodate a booth, or discreetness is paramount. It requires no equipment and no installation time. The limitation is the audience size: whispering effectively to more than two people simultaneously is not feasible without equipment, at which point a portable whisper system (bidule) becomes the appropriate solution.

Rates for chuchotage are comparable to those for consecutive interpreting and typically lower than full simultaneous interpreting with equipment, making it a cost-effective choice for small-group scenarios in Belgium.
